  • I was fortunate to travel to Greenland each summer from 2010-13 to collect fluorescent minerals and was ticketed to go again in the summer of 2015 when the labrum of my left hip tore walking around my back yard. Shortly after is when I met you and in August of that year you repaired the tear. Fast forward to 2016 and I was ready to go again, only to have something similar happen on my right hip. Again, you performed your magic. Life intervened in 2017-18 as we relocated close to where our children and grandchildren live. But, in 2019, I finally made it back to the mountains of Greenland and celebrated my 74th birthday collecting fluorescent minerals with friends. Needless to say, it would never have been possible without you.

Today in the time of Covid, my wife and I walk the neighborhoods and local parks here in Virginia. I don't expect to return to the mountains, but being able to walk anywhere is a blessing and I want to thank you for everything you've done for me. Thank you so much and God Bless.

  • I couldn't recommend anyone other than Dr. Youm. It is because of him I regained total mobility of my hips. In 2015 I underwent labral repair and bone shaving on both hips just two months apart. I fully recovered and was back to running and dancing before I knew it. I had no pain.

Recently I developed pain in my hips again, upon seeing Dr. Youm it was found that I had femoral acetabular impingement. I knew moving along with this surgery I was in good hands. I don't trust anyone else. It is because of him I felt confident in this next surgery. Just two days ago I underwent my 3rd hip surgery where I received an allograft.

While recovering I figured I'd write this. It is unfortunate we meet under these circumstances but there isn't anyone else I'd want operating on me. Dr. Youm has operated on my mother, brother, and a few other family members. To say we trust him is an absolute understatement. I would highly recommend him.

Thank you Dr. Youm for everything you've done for me!

  • I had Cam impingement surgery on my left hip by Dr. Youm, in September of 2018. Dr. Youm and his staff are very professional and attended to all my needs and questions. Before the surgery I would have pain in my left hip, lower left back and groin areas all day ever day. It is 5 months after my surgery and I have no where near the pain I had before the surgery. I am still in the heeling process and my left hip feels much better everyday. I am glad I went with DR. Youm for my surgery. If I had any other aliments that Dr. Youm specializes in I would pick him over any other Dr.

  • After years of increasing pain and reduced mobility in both shoulders I was refered to Dr. Youm. The doctor performed reverse Arthroplasty on both shoulders in 2018.The pain is gone and mobility in both is greatly improved. Dr. Youm, his staff and the staff N.Y.U. Langone were clear, caring and very efficient. This is a great choice for joint injuries or repair needs.

  • I've had three hip and two shoulder surgeries performed by Dr. Youm, the first being five years ago just after my 65th birthday and the most recent being one a week ago. Why have I returned to the same surgeon for all five instead of taking friends' advice and trying their surgeons whom they swear by? Easy answer: he's really good, effective and smart, not reactionary AND I trust him. The office staff is great, the hospital staff where the surgery is performed is good and the anesthesiologist are responsive; I get terrible nausea after surgery and they have either given me a epidural and or incapacitated the target surgery area. In other words, they listen and do their best to get me through the ordeal of being put under. Of course this time I had to endure feeling as though I had a link sausage hanging from my shoulder socket for about 12 hours but it was worth it to avoid having to go to the ER because of severe vomiting. Back to Dr. Youm, he gets me. He knows that I'm a type A who must play tennis to exhaustion on hard courts or carry heavy shopping up my five flights or run for every light or push push push myself beyond my physical limits. So with all due respect to my friends who insist on my trying their surgeons I say Nope. Not while I have Dr. Youm as my option.

  • Doctor Youm is a very reliable trustworthy doctor. He performed surgery on my hip over 8 years ago and I've been feeling great ever since. He is a very honest and helpful doctor and I only have positive experiences with him. I highly reccomend. Thank you Doctor Youm for your help and amazing follow up throughout the last 8 years.

  • Dr. Youm performed stem cell therapy on my left shoulder and healed the biceps tear (“SLAP tear") and minor rotator cuff tear in my left shoulder. I went from being in dire pain with limited mobility before the treatment and now I have full range of motion without pain. I thought Dr. Youm was upfront and thorough with the expectations and the process of the treatment. I would definitely consider stem cell treatment as an alternative to surgery and I felt I achieved about 98% of the strength back in my biceps and NO PAIN.

  • In my opinion Dr Youm is an excellent orthopedic surgeon. I had been to orthropods at Hospital for Special Surgery,Rothman Clinic and Geisinger of which none were able to help me. I was grateful he ordered another test and then proceeded to help me with surgery.....he even understood my anxiety through the whole process. I would recommend Dr Youm to anyone with Musculoskeletal problems.

  • For years I was unable to sit for more than 5 minutes w/o pain. After many different Dr. and Pt and MRsI Cat scans and x-rays, the pain progressively become worse, I suffered for years. I finely found Dr. Youm and after 5min and one more test he was able to diagnose the torn labrum in my left hip. He preformed a Hip Arthroscopy and I have been pain free for the last 4 years. I will always recommend him, I travel from LI to see him in Manhattan and always satisfied w/ my care. His office staff is very friendly and through. I wish more Doctors were like him. He always made me feel I was his most important patient in his pratice.

  • Dr Youm is a miracle worker. I had a torn labrum, tendon issues, and a multitude of other problems after being hit by a car. Not only did he make my hip better than before but he stuck with me through the long and arduous process that comes with insurance claims. He was able to explain to me exactly what surgery would be like, how my recovery would go and even before that he gave me options that would ease my pain that weren't a part of his practice . Dr Youm is absolutely the best and I couldn't have asked for a better doctor.

  • Dr Youm repaired my meniscus and my sons. He is a great Doctor. Both my son and myself have fully recovered from our surgeries and are really happy with the results. The care we received in the office was phenomenal . Mayra C. is great, she was very helpful during our time there. she is very professional and she is good at what she does.

  • Introduction

Measuring the change in the density of cartilage after a year is a very useful metric - relatively easy to measure reliably and validly. Evaluating the efficacy of the procedure, however, goes beyond that in a couple of respects. The first is that the conditions (which may be alterable) that affect the relative success of the procedure must be understood, both additively and interactively, and the degree to which a model of those may be properly specified seems quite low at this point. Hence, gathering data from the patients themselves might be very useful in a couple of respects. I must state up front that as a social scientist I find the idea of “testimonials/' as opposed to self-reports or self-evaluations of the impact across time of the procedure on routine and volitional activities, difficult to swallow. After wrestling with this, I have decided to respond in a somewhat expanded form out of respect for the clinic staff and Dr. Youm

In my case, I had been suffering from increasing arthritis and diminished cartilage in both knees, with my left knee being a lot worse than my right. My preferred style of life includes both a lot of walking and participation in quite a few different sports activities, so doing something about my knees has been a high priority for me. I had been receiving hyaluronic acid injections every six months for a year and a half. These injections were useful in helping me engage in routine activities (walking, climbing and descending stairs, and beginning to walk without stiffness and/or much pain after sitting for an hour or so) and more volitional activities (pickleball, tai chi and kungfu, and long bike rides). However, near the end of each six-month cycle, both sets of activities became more painful and challenging. There was also a pronounced reduction in the

Positive impact of these injections from one cycle to another, with the first cycle having a very large impact and the third cycle having virtually no impact. It was at that point that I contemplated either having a double knee replacement or trying stem cell therapy.

How did the Stem Cell injections alter my ability to engage in routine and more voluntary activities?

In order to assess this more objectively, I constructed a self-report scale of routine-activity-engagement pain, with 0 representing no pain at all and 9 representing debilitating pain, and used the week (which I tried to make as typical as possible) before the procedure as a baseline for assessing the level of pain I was experiencing and enabling a more reliable assessment of any changes in felt pain after the procedure. I also kept track of the number of steps (from my Fitbit watch) I took each day as a crude way of assessing the amount of stress I was putting on my knees each day. I stopped gathering data after about five weeks — simply because I was not learning anything interesting beyond the immediate effects. From the very first day, my felt pain was cut from 5 to 2.9. I had expected that there might be a short-term improvement that paralleled the hyaluronic acid injections, and though I write this report two months after the procedure, I have experienced no fluctuation in pain even though my step numbers varied considerably from about 4,000 to 12,000 over that period.

After the first month I began biking for longer periods, playing pickleball more seriously and participating in kung fu more rigorously - all without an increase in pain. And although others reported that at one point I had a mild increase in swelling in my knees, any swelling was temporary. Nor have I experienced any weakness in the back of my knees. I must admit I would love to understand the mechanisms better, but at least in terms of 2-month outcomes, I can report that the procedure was a success for me.

I should note that the difference between routine and voluntary activities is that the former revolve around things that one must do if one is to live a “normal" life defined in terms of the activities in which one engaged prior to the onset of severe knee problems - things like doing small errands, shopping for groceries, going for a walk or to the movies with family members, getting out of bed and going to the bathroom. The latter embraces more of the sorts of things that lifestyle preference scales pick up. But there are tremendous variations across people in the sorts of things they would define as routine or voluntary, and normality can only be assessed with reference to what one was in the habit of doing before (in this case) one's knees became challenged. Such things are important because that is the frame of reference that people use to judge the success of a procedure: can I do what I need to do and enjoy doing the way I used to?

Is there anything that stood out about the medical care?

I was quite impressed with the initial interview. The procedure was thoroughly explained and the prospect that the longer-term outcomes might be conditioned by the amount of cartilage in each knee was emphasized. The procedure itself was conducted very professionally, including careful x-rays and a collaborative relationship between the clinic and the maker of the critical centrifuge, and thoughtful advice regarding the resumption of normal activities. I was not experiencing much anxiety (though my diastolic and systolic readings were higher than usual just before the procedure). Having injections in one's knees is a lot less anxiety-inducing than the sorts of surgical procedures I am used to doing research on (multi-fetal reductions) - where

the course of anxiety before, during and after the operation can be critical with respect to medical, psychological and relational outcomes. Hence, I would say that the frankness of the discussion about the possible effects of the procedure stood out the most, followed by my appreciation of the collaborative aspects of the procedure and the apparent collaboration on data gathering and analysis that is presumably taking place. For me, given some of the other research I have done, that collaboration added some credibility to the procedure.

Recommendations to friends about stem cell injections?

I have recommended consideration of this procedure to a couple of people with whom I engage in one or another sports activity. I have noted that as of yet, there are no clinical trials, so that choosing a specialist with considerable experience and reputation is even more important than usual, even going to the point of recommending Dr. Youm and the RYC clinic. I have shared my experiences and noted that the only downside at this point is the lack of coverage by insurance.

  • Stem cell injection helped me by relieving pain in my knee. Now I basically walk pain free! Dr. Youm spent quality time with me and eased my anxiety. He was excellent. I would tell others to definitely go for the injection!

  • I tore my labrum, rotator cuff, and upper biceps playing beach volleyball. I was told that the only option is to fix this was with a surgery. In 4 months after a stem cell injection by Dr. Youm, the pain has almost disappeared and I started weight training. Happy to be back in the game in a few months. Dr. Youm was very straightforward and kept my expectations realistic. Also he spent a good amount of time educating me on the cat scan of what my situation was about. Overall, very pleased by the staff. If you have the money to spend, definitely give this a shot before you take the surgery path.

  • The stem cell injections I had on both knees were amazing! I was in severe pain and limping before stem cell therapy. I had cortisone shots on both knees prior. Also synvisc injections. Also 12 weeks of physical therapy. Nothing worked. Stem cell treatment enabled me to walk in a month without pain and now I can walk 10 blocks at a time without pain and not limping. Dr. Youm's knowledge and ability stands out from the first appointment to after care. He is an expert truly in his field. The best decision I made was to make an appointment to see Dr. Youm in December of 2014. I had recommended 2 friends to him in the past few months and will continue to recommend Dr. Youm.

  • Dr. Youm has performed two important surgeries on me in the last six years. Each has been a success and I have been able to get back to my full active life after both operations. Personalized service is what stands out the most with Dr. Youm. His advice is based on me and my activiites, not just some random patient. Also, for my broken collarbone operation, he fit me into his surgery schedule the next day because he knew it needs to be operated on immediately in order to recover properly. I've already recommended Dr. Youm many times to great reviews. If you are looking for a competent, down to earth surgeon who has impeccable skills, see him. Sometimes surgery is not needed, and he will tell you that.

  • The surgery was incredible! I have no pain nor did I have any pain after surgery. When I woke up in the recovery room, I could tell immediately that my hip already felt so much better than it had. I dealt with the hip pain for a couple of years and it increasingly continued to get worse. I knew something was wrong. If I had to do it all again, I wouldn't even hesitate about having the hip arthroscopy surgery. Absolutely 100% worth it. I only wish I had done it sooner!

Dr. Youm has such a pleasant demeanor, he really makes you comfortable with the whole procedure. His explanations are fantastic and very detailed in a way that you can clearly understand. I was very comfortable asking questions, even if they seemed mundane and obvious. He proposed every available option and never made me feel pressured to make a rash decision. His staff was also very pleasant and helpful as well!

I wouldn't even hesitate to recommend Dr. Youm to anyone who needs an Orthopaedic Surgeon. In fact, my husband needed knee surgery and I strongly suggested him to see Dr. Youm. He did and also had his surgery performed by him. He is equally as happy as I am and feels great! We are both walking and running again! Thank you, Dr. Youm!

  • Dr. Youm is an expert and a true professional. As a young adult male working a manual labor job, my life was not pleasant on a daily basis having two bad hips. Surgery was hard but the outcome was better than I imagined. My hips do not bother me daily anymore. Dr. Youm expressed personal interest and sincerity. The most important thing to him was and is my quality of life.

  • The surgery Dr. Youm performed on me was life changing. I had severe pain in my back that was prohibiting me from enjoying time with my young children. After he performed hip surgery, all of my issues were gone. I now enjoy my kids and can play sports, give them baths, and work out/exercise without any pain. Dr. Youm's care throughout the entire process was superb. You can tell he genuinely cares and is concerned about your concerns. I would tell a friend looking for an orthopaedic surgeon, “Here's his number…You won't regret it!"

    L. King

  • Dr. Youm restored my confidence in my physical capabilities. I had two major issues (hamstring and shoulder injuries) that he fixed and now I am a lot more comfortable physically and mentally. What stands out about Dr. Youm is the time he spent with me, the quality of his care, his post-operative care, and the professionalism of his support staff. They were outstanding. If you have a medical plan to accommodate Dr. Youm's services or can afford it, he is highly recommended.

  • Dr. Youm's arthroscopic surgery on both of my hips helped get my life back in order. I was able to return to my everyday active lifestyle. Surgery allowed me to live my life pain-free. The medical care of RYC Orthopaedics and Dr. Youm was outstanding. He provided me with all the knowledge I needed to know to get through surgery safely and efficiently. The quality of their care and service was at a very high level. I would definitely tell my friend to come to Dr. Youm. I would tell them that they would be in good hands with Dr. Youm. I would also assure my friend that RYC Orthopaedics would take great care of them and they would get the care they needed.

  • Before surgery with Dr. Youm, I was walking with a cane and in pain every day. Now after hip arthroscopy, I am back to where I was before my injury. I'm physically active and I consider the surgery 100% effective. Dr. Youm's level of care has been excellent throughout, from first consultation, through surgery, post-surgical care and (two years later) final visit. Dr. Youm has provided excellent medical care and has a great personable manner that has alway put me at ease. He respected my desire for information, my ability to make decisions, and when I was in pain he always listened and took that seriously.

I would highly recommend Dr. Youm to anyone needing an opinion and/or surgery. In fact, I found Dr. Youm because of a recommendation from a patient.

    C. Benjamin

  • Dr. Youm is my hero! He is so skilled at what he does. The quality of care he provided was second to none. This was my first surgical experience. The staff at RYC Orthopedics was very helpful, informative and caring both before and after my surgery. They are a very professional, caring, knowledgeable staff. Having total knee replacement surgery has really improved the quality of my life. For the first time in 3 years, I can walk without a limp, my leg is straight, and I have no pain. I look forward to taking long walks, swimming, and dancing. Basde on my personal experience, I would highly recommend Dr. Youm and RYC Orthopedics for any orthopedic needs.

  • I had hip arthroscopy surgery by Dr. Youm to fix a torn labrum, on both the right and left hip. Having the surgeries helped improve my physical performance when working out and playing sports and drastically reduced the amount of pain I was experiencing. Prior to the surgery, I was very cautious and wasn't able to work out to my maximum potential because of the pain. The surgeries helped my hip areas feel much tighter and secure and gave me the confidence to know it was safe to build back up my strength. Prio to the surgery, I could only walk a couple of blocks before I would experience extreme pain and living in NYC that's quite disabling! After having the surgery, I'm able to walk endlessly without having pain and keep up with the hustle and bustle of the city. Furthermore, I'm an athlete and always have been. At 26, being told you need hip surgery is life changing. Going into surgery I was worried that my active lifestyle would have to change forever. Even though it took time to work through physical therapy, I can say that I feel as if I haven't skipped a beat and have already built back up to the same performance level, if not better!

Everything about both Dr. Youm and his staff stands out. From my initial meetings to my follow up appointments, they were very thorough and conscious of my needs and keeping me informed. On the day of surgery, it meant a lot to me that Dr. Youm took the time to visit me both before and after going into the surgery to make sure I was comfortable and understood the process. I had no questions left unanswered at any point during the process, which I found very comforting. On top of that, Dr. Youm never seemed rushed during my visits and made sure that he explained everything to my understanding (and I would bring lists of questions!). This was refreshing in a world where I find most physicians are running a stop watch during your appointment.

I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Youm. I have several friends who have had labrum repair surgeries from other surgeons and have had poor results. I had absolutely no issues during or after my surgeries and would recommend him to my closest friends and family. He is absolutely amazing!

    B Spivey

  • Dr. Youm is a kind, compassionate doctor who has given me many helpful options for my arthritic knees. He does not rush me into surgery! I've recommended Dr. Youm to several friends and they've been very pleased. We need more doctors like Dr. Youm (I'm glad to know he is training medical students).

P.S. He's helped my husband too! (with shoulder and back pain).

    Gail Barracano

  • I saw Dr. Youm for a complicated labrum repair in September 2013. I had been increasingly in pain for the several years leading up to the surgery and was suspicious of the idea that the surgery would really address the problem. It did. Recovery from any surgery is necessarily incremental and slow, but within a year I was not only fully functional again, I am completely pain-free. Before the surgery I couldn't sit still through a meal, much less a movie, because the pain was searing. I would shift around in my seat and eventually just have to get up and walk around until the pain eased. The real test came this Thanksgiving when I drove my standard transmission through three hours of rain and sleet, clutching and maneuvering through complicated traffic…with no pain! I'm very excited to be able to tout Dr. Youm's remarkable skill and care throughout the process, from pre-operative to post-operative care. I'd whole-heartedly recommend him to anyone who asks.

  • After years of issues with my hip and multiple visits to other doctors, Dr. Youm finally had an answer. The surgery he performed has helped me get back into running which I am incredibly grateful for. What stands out about Dr. Youm is the quality of care and professionalism I received from him. I have already referred multiple people to Dr. Youm for sports-related injuries and will continue to do so.

    Kaitlyn Somers

  • Dr. Youm performed hip arthroscopy to repair my torn labrum. Almost immediately after surgery I was pain-free, moving only within a limited range of motion of course. Even with the restriction of using a brace and crutches, I was realizing for the first time in over a year that I was on the path to being “normal" again. Dr. Youm was informative, professional, as well as friendly and soothing. The biggest concern I had was not to be talked into a hip replacement. When he told me arthroscopic surgery was definitely indicated - keeping body parts is important - I knew I had come to the right person! I would most definitely recommend Dr. Youm highly as well as the NYU Outpatient Hospital and all of its staff. No one wants to have surgery but if it is necessary, I can't imagine a better medical solution/experience. Thank you to everyone!

    Judy Clifford

  • Dr. Youm performed hip arthroscopy on me and it helped me tremendously! It brought back the normal every day use of my hip. It's those daily quality of life tasks that made the surgery worthwhile. What stands out about Dr. Youm is the overall quality of care and his patience to answer all my questions prior to and after the surgery…and I had a lot of questions. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Youm!

    Lesley Carmona Lewis

  • I had a high tibial osteotomy in both legs to prevent osteoarthritis of the knee and potential need for a total knee replacement down the line. The surgery was necessary due to a genetic deformity that put undue pressure on my inner knees. Dr. Youm was not only an excellent and skilled surgeon but he also listened carefully to my questions and addressed my concerns with care. He has a great bedside manner and was flexible in working with me during recovery. I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Youm to a friend (and have) because I trust that he has the right combination of skill, talent, training, expertise, and humility. He sees himself as a partner in his patient's care. He definitely understood that I could play a key role in my recovery and respected my own judgement about my body's signals.

    Darragh Worland

  • Dear Dr. Youm,

I am writing to thank you for repairing a torn labrum on my right hip 8 weeks ago. I am having a good recovery from the surgery and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the fact that I had this procedure done.

Faced with the fact that I was 60 years of age, I had several doubts, one of them being whether or not to have this surgery done. After my initial consultation with you, I left your office feeling reassured that I had a good chance for a good outcome. I can't tell you how much it meant to me when I expressed a few more concerns to you via email and you took the time out of your busy schedule to call me up and address them. Besides your excellent credentials, you are a wonderful person, as well as doctor.

Your office staff is professional and a pleasure to deal with. When I mentioned the fact that I live on Long Island, they assisted in making things easy in the way of correspondence (Crystal)…Jake delivered my hip brace and ice machine to the Langone Center since it wasn't easy for me to pick them up prior to the surgery.

I was treated with the best of care at the Langone Outpatient Center. Everyone was very attentive and courteous and made things very comfortable for me. When I walked into the OR and mentioned to Dr. Popovic that I was feeling a little overwhelmed, he took action to get me under quickly. He was right when he told me I was in “good hands".

I just want to add that I have not had any pain, only soreness which continues to improve each day. I am grateful to you for this. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to continue doing what I love to do, which is walking and hiking. It is so nice to know that I won't have to settle for a sedentary lifestyle yet.

    Evelyn Deitsch

  • Dr. Youm is the greatest he did my reconstructive surgery on my knee and it was successful. I highly recommend him for everyone.

    Kisha Whiteside-Charles

  • I had injured my hip several years ago and was not able to get past the pain and restriction, even with physical therapy. I finally had X-rays and an MRI which showed two tears, arthritis and a bone spur. I consulted two well known surgeons in Naples Fl who told me I was 'too old' to have arthroscopic hip surgery. They just wanted to replace my hip. I was referred to Dr. Youm and after reviewing my case, he told me he would do the surgery. After surgery he told me he was able to repair all of the damage, as well as loosen a restrictive tendon. I was surprised how well I felt after the surgery. There was minimal pain and only in the area of the incisions. I was instructed to use the crutchesfor a month, even though after a few days I felt I could walk without them. I was amazed. I am now 2 months into PT and progressing very well. My PT is also amazed at the speed of my progress.
Dr. Youm a wonderful job. He is one of the most pleasant and attentive doctors that I have ever met.

    Eileen Gallagher

  • My initial surgery for right rotator cuff repair by a Doctor in Long Island was not successful. In fact, it was quite a problem. Dr. Youm ordered an MRI and reported he was unsure if it was repairable as the blood supply and tissue were poor. But, somehow he had the skill to repair it. Eventually, I needed repair of the left rotator cuff and the experience was wonderful and repair was successful. Thank you Dr. Youm! Dr. Youm is not only skilled providing quality care - he is kind, a good listener and spends time explaining effectively any concerns you have and offering suggestion that have always provided resolutions. I would say, and, in fact, have told many friends and family members about the wonderful care Dr. Youm provides - he is a “True Gem" of a Doctor and a wonderful person. I have told him several times that his parents have done a great job raising him to be such a fine person. His office staff have always been kind and patient and helpful - and his physician assistant is included in this comment.

    Della Garrity

  • Dr. Youm's surgery helped me SUBSTANTIALLY! I was very please with the arthroscopic surgery on my left shoulder. I had been experiencing substantial pain for several months and the outcome was a complete success. This is my 2nd surgery with Dr. Youm (first one was the right shoulder). I find his care outstanding and would not hesitate to recommend him. Great bedside manner, great treatment from start to finish. Dr. Youm is personable and his staff is outstanding. I have already recommended Dr. Youm and would gladly do so again.

    Miguel Fittipaldi

  • After hip arthroscopy by Dr. Youm, I am able to do all the activities I enjoy without pain. Dr. Youm cares about each individual patient. He provided a correct diagnosis and the surgery worked! I would recommend Dr. Youm.

    Sarah Muroski

  • I have my life back! Dr. Thomas Youm is the Dr. that everyone wants and needs. Trust him. He is the best.

    Jeannette Newhook

  • I would highly recommend Dr. Youm, and have, as my hip feels better than it had in years. Before surery, I was in constant pain. It hurt to get out of bed in the morning and walk across the floor. A year out, pain and stiffness is all but gone and I've returned to normal physical activities that I had put on the backburner. The post-operative care has been helpful and informative.

    Tyler Rivenbark

  • The shoulder surgery by Dr. Youm was the best thing I ever did. Before the surgery, I was in pain 24/7. And also, I was not able to sleep, not able to lift heavy objects, or even light weights in the gym. I have never met a more caring and attentive doctor (surgeon) than Dr. Youm. He listens as well as gives advice and explained everything that happened in laymens terms. He is also very easy to talk to and joke with. Go (run!) to Dr. Youm. He is the best doctor!

    Joann Morabito

  • I had constant knee pain before Dr. Youm did my knee surgery. After the surgery, I haven't experienced any knee pain or problems with my knee. I was able to resume all normal activities. Everything in Dr. Youm's office is very organized and done quickly but very thoroughly. The doctor explains all courses of action and what is going to be done for care. I would tell others that Dr. Youm has a very patient-friendly office. All of the staff is great and they answer all questions if you have any. Dr. Youm is great when it come to the proper procedures for the things you are experiencing. And pre- and post- surgery is a pleasurable experience.

    Patrick Rafulowitz

  • Hip arthroscopy by Dr. Youm eliminated the daily pain I felt in my hip immediately and has gotten me on my way to resuming the level of physical activity that I want to engage in. The quality of care before and after surgery and the thorough answers to my questions are what stand out to me, in addition to the great outcome from my surgery. I would absolutely recommend Dr. Youm to anyone in need of an orthopaedic surgeon.

  • I underwent knee arthroscopy with Dr. Youm. The surgery allowed me to play basketball, hike, golf, play baseball, and resume a physically active lifestyle without limitations. What stands out with Dr. Youm is the quality of care and efficiency of the procedure. I have already recommended a friend to Dr. Youm who has had surgery and successful treatment.

  • I should have submitted my testimonial a while ago but better late then never. I was 39 at the time of my surgery..I had hip surgery done by Dr. Youm in Feb of 2010…I tore the labrum in my right hip. I was very active prior to the surgery….baseball…hockey and judo.. long story short….I have been back to all activities and still going strong at 42. I have referred a couple of people to Dr. Youm. All of them happy with their results…You in good hands with Dr. Youm and his crew.

  • A+!!! I was misdiagnosed for elbow pain by another Orthopedic surgeon, and felt hopeless and dismayed when I arrived at Dr. Youm's office.

He was immediatelyable to diagnose my rare condition, and came up with the proper course of treatment.

Dr. Youm even made it to the office just 2 days after Hurricane Sandy to ensure I was healing properly after surgery.

He is a brilliant diagnostician and his bedside manner cannot be beat.

I am thrilled to finally feel better, and cannot recommend him highly enough!

  • I feel so fortunate to have chosen Dr. Youm for my total knee replacement surgery. I'm walking faster and further than I have in years, and it's only been 2.5 months! I did not expect to feel this good so soon. Dr. Youm is talented and passionate about his work, and I highly recommend him.

  • Dr. Youm changed my life. I have always been an active person- playing tennis and golf and then I became an old person! The pain in my knees made me unable to do the things I enjoy. I was side-lined in many ways until my total knee replacement. I am back on the tennis court and golf course and I feel like I got my life back. Dr. Youm was amazing and I have sent many people to his office. My friends call me a “poster child" for knee replacement surgery and I credit Dr. Youm.

  • Two weeks ago, Dr. Youm performed total knee replacement surgery on my left knee which had been ruined by osteoarthritis. My recovery has been SO encouraging - I am not in pain and I've been walking without a cane for a week with significant range of motion. I like Dr. Youm's manner and attentiveness and the professionalism of his staff. I most highly recommend his services!

  • Last year, when I was diagnosed with a complete labral tear in my right hip and also FAI, I was devastated. I had been an avid distance runner for years, and the pain I had developed was so severe that I was afraid I would never race again. Thankfully, I met Dr. Youm. In April of 2011, he performed arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear. In November of 2011, after 6 months of rehab that Dr. Youm helped coach me through, I completed the NYC ING Marathon - my fourth. My surgical hip didn't offer a single complaint during any of the 26.2 miles. I can offer no better testimonial than that.

  • Dear Sir / Madam,
I cannot say enough about how wonderful I feel Dr. Youm is. I was referred to him after sustaining another knee injury and being told that I am too old to continue my active lifestyle. I was so discouraged and not even able to walk when I met Dr. Youm. His bedside manner handled my challenging personality and gave me hope that post-op I would be able to resume the lifestyle I am accustom to living. He took the time to thoroughly explain the surgery I would and what the recovery process would entail. He left nothing to chance or surprise and I left his office knowing I had found my surgeon. I was on crutches for 8 weeks total and my recovery was just as Dr. Youm said it would be. I had surgery March 30th and 6 weeks after coming off crutches I was able to take my bike out for a 20 mile ride. I have since been able to downhill ski and participate in an indoor triathlon in January and hoping to do several more this summer. I owe my ability to continue my active lifestyle to Dr. Youm and am thankful for him and all he has done for me! Trust me when I say that I am not an easy consumer to please as I have worked in the medical field for 25 years and demand a lot from those whom I seek medical care from. Dr. Youm not only stepped up to the plate he exceeded any expectation that I had of him. I highly recommend Dr. Youm and his colleagues for any and all of your orthopedic surgical needs.

  • I was quite nervous about the potential of having surgery for the first time ever and met with various surgeons about my condition. Dr. Youm was comforting and attentive from the start.

I went to three different surgeons for opinions and Dr. Youm was the only surgeon to notice the actual cause of my injury. Where others had seen a “standard" labral tear, Dr. Youm looked at my injury through a cause and effect lens and was able to see the true cause. His focus on fixing the problem, but also preventing future problems, was exactly the type of care I was looking for. I am extremely grateful for his ability to see what others had missed, allowing me to avoid future injuries.

It has been 6 months since my surgery and my hip has never felt better. Before my surgery, I could not walk a block without severe pain, but now I move freely, without pain or worry. I would not only recommend, but I would encourage, anyone with orthopaedic issues to see Dr. Youm. I am extremely grateful for his dedication, approachability, sincerity and talent.

  • Dr. Thomas Youm is a most special doctor, the finest, most expert surgeon, and above all, a caring, concerned professional who possesses every quality you hope to find in a doctor to whom you have entrusted your life, limb, and well-being. Dr. Youm performed two total replacement surgeries on my knees transforming them from a painful disabled condition to complete unrestricted pain-free movement and activity. For me, as a teacher of ballet, this outcome signified a return to a full teaching schedule for my legs and full satisfaction and contentment for my mind.

I thank Dr. Youm for the excellence of his care-pre- and post-surgery; for always being available to listen-and really hear and understand my worries and questions; for always being ready to discuss concerns and anxieties in a straightforward, patient way.

I am grateful indeed for Dr. Youm's medical expertise and equally appreciative of the manner in which he performs and practices it and I thank him wholeheartedly.

  • My mother is now 91 and walking great without the use of cane or other device. She had her second hip surgery with Dr Davidovitch 2 years ago at 89 and her first hip replacement 2 years before that also with him. She was in constant pain and using a walker because of the pain. At 89, we were hesitant to have her go into any kind of surgery, but now I am so glad she did. Had she not done it, she would not have been mobile and would have declined quickly from there. This changed the trajectory of her life, and I think we still have her with us because of the surgery. Amazingly, the recovery at that time was easy for her, too. I attribute that to Dr. Davidovitch's skill, anterior surgical approach (this is key), his well run practice, and top notch hospital care. Thank you, Dr Davidovitch.

  • I am a 79 year old dancer who has had two total hip replacements (right -2019, left-June 15, 2023) from Dr. Davidovitch. Every aspect of care, from pre op preparation, to the morning of the surgery, to the detailed follow up in the weeks after surgery, was at the highest level and gave me a feeling of confidence and security. My life is centered around dancing, rehearsing and performing, and that life has been returned to me. I was able to return to rehearsal at the six week mark, and feel stronger as each week passes.

The advice post op, of focusing on rest, was invaluable. The Force program sent out daily helped me monitor my exercises. And the security of being in touch with Siobhan and the team post op is a vital part to making the recovery process so great. I am and will remain thankful to Dr. Davidovitch and the team forever.

  • Amazing experience!

  • Had my left hip done 4/2019 and my right 1/2022. I play tennis and was able to play after 3 months and 4 months respectively. I am a physician and highly recommend Dr. Davidovich and his team. I already have referred 2 other MDs to him, and both completed surgeries successfully.

  • 2 hip replacements and I'm good as new. Very Grateful!

  • I had total hip replacement on both hips (separately--six weeks apart). Dr. Davidovitch did a fantastic job. I'm about a year out from the first surgery, and my hips feel great--completely normal. I am back in the gym doing leg presses (over 250 lbs), running (which took some practice), and, most importantly, playing sports again (tennis, roller blading, a little basketball, throwing around a football and a baseball, etc.).

I walked out of the hospital the same day of each surgery and never had any issues. I take that back--about four months after the second surgery, I went on a crazy long hike in a national park--standing or walking with really no place to sit for about five hours. I stayed out hiking all day because I was allowed to walk as much as I could tolerate and felt fine all day. However, the next day, one hip did hurt. I thought that I had messed up by having been out so long. But, my hip joints were perfectly fine; in one of my hips, I had apparently strained the muscle/connective tissue, which had not been used to that extent in years.

I tell the story to give a complete picture, but also to point out that I used the app to contact the doctor's office, and they got right back to me. They explained that by just walking (I was still in the time period where I was not yet supposed to run, I believe, and I had not run), it was highly unlikely that I damaged the joint and that I had most likely just over exerted the muscles/connective tissue, to just rest it, and it should be fine, which it was. The pain never occurred again--and I have been out on hikes or walks over say four or more hours, e.g., the zoo, albeit, if I know that I will be walking/standing for several hours, I do try get in a few minutes of sitting per hour. But, an import point is that Dr. Davidovitch's staff was extremely responsive in that case and whenever else I had questions (I had some questions about the amount of exercises, if I recall correctly; I'm a person with a lot of questions).

As to the surgeries themselves, after the anesthesia wore off, I felt what I'm told are the normal effects of surgery (which I had never previously had) for about two to three days--you're just not 100%--but with minimal, if any, pain. For one hip I took no pain meds; for the other, I took pain meds once or maybe twice, more as a precaution because I felt slight pain and they suggested being ahead of it. But that was it--no real issues.

The incisions healed beautifully. On both hips, I took the bandage off after a few days, as per the instructions, and that was it--everything was fine and healed extremely well. I can now barely tell where either incision was.

In summary, Dr. Davidovitch was nice, did a stupendous job, and everything worked out great. FYI, I did opt for the procedure with the use of the computer robot (or whatever it is exactly). I highly recommend Dr. Davidovitch.

  • very clean and professional atmosphere, Dr Davidovitch is caring and thorough with his work. Personally, I am still in a bit of pain but mostly my own fault due to lack of physical therapy/care management.

  • Start to finish perfect experience. Very professional, caring, knowledgeable and efficient. Hospital experience could not have been better in any way.

  • As a retired recovery room nurse who took care of hundreds of the traditional hip replacement , the anterior approach was amazing. The protocol for Dr D is spot on… everything works in a most efficient manner. No time lag. EVERYONE in his team are most caring and efficient. I met Mako , my robot, I came out of surgery with NO PAIN👏👏👏

I never had pain after and I walked into my house 12 hrs after I arrived home from the hospital. I can not praise or admire Dr. Davidovitch and his team more. Excellent care throughout this experience. I would give them 10 stars.

    Thank you so very much.

  • Many years of professional ballet performance, teaching ballet and fitness and finally osteoarthritis, I was in need of a Total Hip Replacement. I found Dr. Roy Davidovitch on line as I was looking specifically for a surgeon who had success with patients with my movement history and who performed an Anterior Total Hip Replacement, which I understood would bode well for a quicker recovery. I left the hospital walking on crutches 4 hours after my surgery and began therapy on-line prescribed by Dr. Davidovitch the next day. I also appreciated that I was able to manage my pain with only Tylenol and Ibuprofen for the initial weeks. His recommendation to use a Game Ready Ice Machine 3X/day was also very helpful in reducing pain and speeding up recovery. My therapy program was updated on line on a schedule and I was able to speak to the nurse practitioner anytime I had questions or concerns. Dr. Davidovitch checked in with me personally through the website and virtual video calls. I started teaching Pilates again 3 months after my surgery and at 1 year, I believe my hip is perfect! I am stronger, more flexible, mobile and agile than I have been in a long time. Thank you, Dr. Davidovitch!

  • Dr Davidovitch replaced my left hip a year ago and after a couple of years of pain and greatly diminished functioning, I have a new lease on life—back to exercising, biking, walking and feeling stronger and more alive. And his team and process was the right mix of guidance, follow-up and attending to my specific needs. I highly recommend Dr Davidovitch.

  • I have had both left and right hip replacements, a year apart, by Dr, Davidovich (Anterior Approach Total Hip Replacement). In both case instances, I was home in six hours, walking around. Dr Davidovich and his entire team were very helpful in both pre-surgery and post surgery in terms of what to expect and answering all my questions. After a few weeks of PT, and following the guidelines, I am back to full function in terms of my own workout routine. I would recommend Dr Davidovich to everyone.

  • I met Dr Davidovitch virtually during Covid. I was interviewing surgeons for a Right Hip Replacement. I had already interviewed and chosen another surgeon but Dr. Davidovitch's name kept coming up as "the best"....I was very impressed with him and his calm, straightforward demeanor; very knowledgeable and self assured. I got on his schedule immediately. My experience from start to finish with his entire was seamless. Every person on his team was responsive and attentive to my needs, from pre-op to post care. My recovery was easy and my results are perfect. In fact, I walked out of the hospital just a few hours after my surgery. I would highly recommend Dr. Davidovitch and his team.

  • Dr. Davidovitch and his staff were exemplary. They walked me through every step from beginning of the paperwork to the therapy which followed. Im.glad I did my research and went with a highly rated Dr and staff. (Arhroscopic surgery for partial tear of left hip labrum).

  • Can't say enough about this man, awesome surgeon, great communication, had anterior hip replacement, walked into surgery in morning, walked out that afternoon.

Arrived home and climbed stairs and got in bed, his technique leaves patient with no restrictions unlike other procedures, he's definitely the one you want...

  • Dr. Davidivich replaced both of my hips about 5 years ago ,problem free ever since, after over a year of researching about hip replacement surgery it was a no brainer to go with him

  • I had both of my hips replaced by Dr Davidovitch most recently my right hip last March 2021. My surgeries were both a success. The anterior approach provided me with a rapid recovery. I returned to work after two weeks. I have no limitations and have been able to return to my regular exercise routine following surgery. Dr Davidovitch and his team provided excellent care before, during and after. I highly recommend Dr Davidovitch if you are in need of a hip replacement. I have referred several people all of whom also had excellent results.

  • As a division 1 football player I wanted the best surgeon, with the quickest recovery, and a high success rate so that I would not have problems. I had a hip labrum repair with a bone impingement shaved down. That's when I was recommended Dr. Davidovitch. Dr. Davidovitch moved quickly, efficiently, and thoroughly during our meetings and conversations leading up to the surgery. Post surgery I never had excruciating pain or pain in general. Therefore, I never had a need to use any type of pain killer. In this way, I have recommended Dr.Davidovitch to friends. I can not thank Dr. Davidovitch enough, you can easily tell that he really cares about you and your specific needs. It was a superb, easy, extremely thorough and personable experience that I highly recommend.

  • I cannot highly recommend Dr. Davidovitch enough. Seven days ago he performed an Anterior Therapeutic Hip Replacement on me. Within 24 hours I was essentially free of pain, walking with assistance and on my way to healing. Now I am fairly able to take care of myself if necessary. Dr. Davidovitch and his staff were the epitome of professionalism and I count myself lucky to have been recommended to them by my son who is also a physician. Words cannot justify the wonderful care he and his staff have afforded me.

  • I've been active in sports all my life. When it was time for a total hip replacement, I researched several doctors before deciding to go with Dr Davidovitch because of his extensive expertise with athletes. I was very happy with the entire experience - the doctor, the office staff, and the hospital staff. I was especially happy with all the follow up from the Dr's team as well as the App to show exercises to help recover so quickly. I would highly recommend Dr D!

  • I had my second hip replacement with Dr Davidovitch in February of 2021. I am feeling great and would highly recommend for a total hip replacement. It was the anterior method and the recovery was quick and the results great!

  • Good afternoon Dr. Davidovitch. I really must thank you and your staff for an amazing surgical experience in replacing my right hip. My recovery has been nothing short of amazing and you and your gifted skills and that of your staff cannot be underestimated or cannot be overstated. Within three days of your expert surgery, I was walking in my home without a cane with almost no discomfort. I had a previous surgery, using the posterior approach, and the differences within a week of surgery is nothing short of a miracle and your gifted hands. I cannot thank you and your staff enough. Your work is truly amazing and a tribute to your expertise and training.

  • Dear Dr. Davidovitch,

I consulted you for a hip replacement after seeing numerous other physicians. At the first visit, I knew I was in the right place. Your consultation was excellent and all questions were answered. The surgery and post-operative care were better than I ever expected.

In the sixth week post-surgery, I reached my major goal by walking three miles for the first time in ten years. I have no pain whatsoever.

When I think of the complexity involved in the surgery you performed and the outstanding outcome, I am honoured to have you as my surgeon and look forward to referring many patients in the future.

Your care and concern have been obvious from beginning to end. My wife, family, and I are extremely appreciative.

  • Every person i came in contact with from within the office to the all of the pre and post surgery, was caring, understanding and willing to assist. Even in the wee hours of the evening in the hospital, someone always answered the call button and took care of whatever was needed.

I am extremely appreciative of Dr. D's willingness to be available by email and answered all kinds of questions, with understanding, and within a very short period of time.

As far as changing my life - thank you. I am again walking for exercise, moving up and down stairs, and back to bowling, even improving my average.

It is great to be able to put my socks on by myself; get in and out of the care without pain and in general, move freely. I even climbed in and out of and flew in a hot air balloon! What an experience. That would never happen before the operation! I am no longer sitting in a chair and asking people to to up and down stairs to get things for me! I am very independent, again.

To Dr. D. and staff, thanks for giving me back the freedom to move on my own, again.

  • I am 51 and, except for my hip, was in excellent shape in 2009. I had significant limitations in my hip range of motion and pain when I did any moderate physical work, such as transplanting in the garden, which I love to do. The pain ranged from my lower back to my knee. I learned that it was all due to degenerative arthritis in my hip.

On Nov. 29, 2010 I celebrated my one year anniversary of my hip implant by playing golf. I walked the course, pain free. My first golf date post-surgery was January 8, 2010, the first of four straight days of golf.

I sought out Dr. Davidovitch after a client of mine had what I considered to be a very speedy recovery from her anterior implant surgery, done by this doctor. I already knew I was a candidate. I was tired of the pain and limitations, especially not being able to put on a sock without a struggle. After a Thursday morning surgery, I was on my home on Saturday. I had in-home physical therapy for about a week, and was then back to the office and pretty-much a regular schedule. I had more P.T. during December and, just as the Dr. had said, hit the links in Florida on Jan. 8 (wearing more that a sweater in the record cold)!

After about another month of P.T. I started at the gym and have been fine. Some pulling and a little discomfort happen every now and then, probably from scar tissue forming, but it is so much better than it had been. I have no regrets. I think stretching is the key.

My care under Dr. Davidovitch has been excellent.

  • I call it “The miracle on 17th street." After having 4 different consults, I decided to have Anterior Hip Replacement surgery with Dr. Davidovitch. It is absolutely terrific to have my former life style restored. No more pills for pain relief, inability to walk distances, discomfort sitting in the theatre, movies or car. Back to walking through museums and not worrying about how far away I'm parked from my destinations. My surgery was on a Thursday, and I was home for lunch on Saturday. Wow - who could ask for anything better. At home I used a cane and was up and down the stairs in my house with no problem - one at a time for a while. Really no pain - more like muscle soreness. May be a need for Thlenol occasionally. The week after my surgery, my husband took me to the mail a few times to walk for exercise. Not a power talk, but definitely exercise. Two weeks post-surgery was my follow-up appointment to have the stitches removed. It was then that I was given permission to drive. Yippee - “Independence Day." My new hip is my very best friend (next to Dr. D.). How fortunate to live in these times when we can replace our worn-out parts. Sincerely, Very satisfied.

  • All I can say is that he promised I would be dancing at my daughter's wedding just 7 weeks after my hip operation and he was absolutely right !!. However, he couldn't change the fact that I am truly lousy dancer!!

He claims I'll be back inside 5 years for the other hip. I respect his judgment, but I sure hope he's wrong. But if I have to do it again he's my man!!!

  • Dr. Roy Davidovitch was great. He was always attentive, always on, always asking a pertinent question, always listening when I had something to say. The operation he performed, with the anterior approach, was great. I healed rapidly and I'm in love with my new hip. I consulted with Dr. Davidovitch multiple times over the last year and a half, since I broke my right hip in an unexpected bicycle accident, an my confidence in him grew steadily during that time. This was the reason I opted to have Dr. Davidovitch perform the surgery on me, and why I accepted his recommendations about what should be done.

  • I am 55 year old female diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hips in 2002. I struggled for the next 8 years as the pain seemed to increase almost daily. I knew I needed surgery but I was afraid. My brother had his hip replaced and his recovery was long and painful. I scoured the internet for more information. I discovered that a minimally invasive technique existed called “anterior total hip replacement". So I read everything I could find about it and decided I was no longer afraid of surgery because the muscles aren't cut so recovery is faster with much less pain. Next step was to find a surgeon who had been specially trained to do this operation and again I turned to the internet. That's when I stumbled across Dr. Davidovitch. I live in New Jersey and when I discovered Dr. D was the first surgeon in New York City to perform an anterior hip replacement I decided to call for an appointment.

I had to take a train, the PATH and a taxi to get to his office, that not easy when it hurts to walk. Dr. D was very professional and patiently answered all my questions. I felt such confidence in him that I scheduled my surgery for the following month. With my right hip replaced I was standing with a walker in the recovery room. The next day Dr. D held my hand while escorting me down the hospital hallway and back without a cane. I was released from the hospital the following day. While at home I dint spend much time in bed. I used a cane and went up and down stairs and outside for walks. After 2 weeks I was able to drive my car that has a manual transmission to and from physical therapy appointments. At my 3 month appointment I asked Dr. D if he would please replace my left hip now. He did. Now I dance in my kitchen because I can. I'm able to stand and talk to someone for an hour or more if I want to. I can shop just for fun. Before I chose to sat at home because the pain of getting out of the car was too much to bare. The pain made it hard to go to sleep and heaven forbid if I moved the wrong way the pain felt like it would shoot through my whole body. Now the joy of pain free movement sometimes overwhelms me. I will never take it for granted again, thanks to Dr. Davidovitch.

  • I would like to preface my remarks by stating that I am a dentist, 75 years old, who has been in practice for 51 years. Several years ago I was diagnosed with arthritis of my right hip and told I would need hip replacement when the pain and discomfort became intolerable. I was forced to stop playing tennis and couldn't even have a baseball catch with my 10 year old grandson. Any physical activity was just too painful.

Having reached the decision to finally proceed with a hip replacement, I had already selected and had a consultation with an orthopaedist who had been highly recommended to me by a number of people, including my colleagues. They had all had the conventional method of hip surgery done, with at least 2-4 month period of recuperation.

At that point my daughter called to tell me that she had been told of a different technique called anterior hip replacement that was being done by a small group of orthopaedists. The technique offered a number of advantages when compared with the conventional method. She convinced me to go for a consultation to the NYU Langone's Hospital for Joint Diseases and to speak with Dr. Roy Davidovitch, an orthopaedic surgeon who had trained for several years with Dr. Joel Matta, a surgeon from California, who introduced the technique in the U.S. more than two decades ago, and who also helped design a special table to simplify the procedure.

I spent one hour of consultation with Dr. Davidovitch and found him to be understanding, very personable and extremely informative. I was told that the surgery was minimally invasive with no major muscles cut, with a shorter hospital stay, smaller incision, less trauma to muscles, less pain and blood loss, reduced risk of dislocation after surgery, faster healing and a quicker return to normal activities. At the end of that appointment I immediately scheduled my surgery for the anterior hip replacement procedure and as I write this narrative it has been one year since the surgery was done and all these predictions have become reality.

On the morning of surgery, Dr. Davidovitch visited with me, and assured me that all would go well. I then walked(limped) down the hallway to the room where the surgery was performed, was greeted warmly by the surgical team, seated and was under anaesthesia in about 10 seconds.

The next thing I remember was being in the recovery room where my wife greeted me. The numbness in my legs gradually disappeared and I was pleased to realize that I wasn't in any pain, nor was I to be at any other time, both in the hospital and back at my home thanks to the surgery and my postoperative care at NYU.

The following day after breakfast my therapy nurse arrived and I was told to begin walking with the aid of a walker. I immediately got out of bed and walked up and down the hallway and up and down a flight of stairs with no pain. I repeated this in the afternoon. By the following day after therapy I was told that I would be going home that afternoon - 2 days after checking into the hospital for my surgery. My attending nurse and physician had already made arrangements for me to start my physical therapy at home and I met with a Home Health Agency representative who made arrangement for me to begin my home therapy the very next day.

My roommate, a man in his 30's at the hospital had undergone conventional hip surgery several days before I had and was still unable to walk across the room by the time I was leaving for home.

The following day I started my home therapy and my therapist was amazed at the progress I was making so quickly after surgery. She told me that I would be ready for my outpatient therapy at the Kessler Rehabilitation Center by the end of the following week, and would no longer need her services. At that point I was already walking 1 mile daily and doing all of my home exercises on my own daily. My wife was an invaluable help in all of my recuperation procedures. By my third week home I was doing both outpatient and at-home therapy and was able to drive.

After 4-1/2 weeks I returned to work at my office while continuing my outpatient therapy 3 afternoons a week and gradually increased my work hours until I was on a full time schedule after 6 weeks.

I now lead a completely normal and active life with absolutely no restrictions and am forever grateful for the skill and personal concern that has been shown to me by Dr. Davidovitch and his excellent staff. I unequivocally recommend this procedure and especially advise person seeking the surgery to make an appointment with Dr. Davidovitch.

    With great appreciation

  • My hip replacement surgery experience was much better than expected!

I choose to have minimally invasive, anterior-cut, total hip replacement surgery performed because i wanted to recover quickly. It was just more intuitive to me that this method would do the least harm to my muscles and nerves and that i would recover quicker. Also since I work in the research & development field, I was intrigued with the use of the HANA table to perform the surgery. I imagined that this table would enable the surgeon to perform the surgery with more precision and would make the operation less stressful to the surgeon as well as the patient.

The Outcome was great. The hospital experience (my first!) was better than expected. The staff was professional and catered to all of my needs. In that time I spent at the hospital for Joint Disease, I only felt the onset of pain once and this was due to the staff being very busy and not being able to provide my meds as per schedule. This was not a problem. Throughout my stay, the pain management doctor worked with me to satisfy my needs and we were able to downgrade the pain meds before I left the hospital because I did not feel the need for it. The physical therapists at the hospital had me up walking immediately and I was climbing stairs the next day. The only suggestion that I would make is that the hospital should have more “walkers" available as they were in great demand by the patients.

The post surgery recovery went well because this type of surgery does not come with any restrictions. I did not have to take precautions with crossing my legs or bending down, etc. The other patients that were going through physical therapy with me did not progress as quickly as I did and they complained about the restrictions that they had since they had a different type of surgery. I concentrated on the exercises that my physical therapist showed me and I did these exercises faithfully many times per day. It paid off. I was back to work in six weeks without a cane and with no pain!

For those considering total hip replacement surgery, I would suggest that they familiarize themselves with the whole process from understanding the disease that caused the problem and how it affects the muscles, the surgical procedure, the hospital stay, and the post surgical recovery. I would suggest that they choose the right doctor and hospital carefully like I did and ask as many questions as possible to fully understand the process. This will alleviate the surprises. Also, there are books and articles on the process that may help.

  • It is with great pleasure that I am writing to you about my entire experience prior to , during and after my anterior hip replacement surgery expertly performed by Dr. Roy Davidovitch at NYU Langone Jt. Disease Hospital.

My entire experience from the initial exam and pre op tests, the surgery and after care given by everyone I encountered made my anterior hip replacement a most successful experience.

I had the good fortune to have spoken to some friends who were aware of this newer method performed by Dr. Davidovitch and indeed I will be forever grateful to have been in his skillful hands.

I can't believe how good I feel now and how quickly I was able to give up the walker (after 3 days at home) and used a cane for my mental security than out of need. I felt I could return to work after about two weeks but my wife insisted I remain home and relaxing, going out to dinner and visiting friends for another two weeks. The staff at the hospital helped me to arrange for home therapy and exercise to hasten my recovery and return to normal. After two weeks people who came to visit couldn't believe I had hip surgery as everyone they knew who had the standard method had weeks of restrictions and pain and I was walking up and down stairs and moving around, and taking my shower with assistance.

I highly recommend Dr. Davidovitch to anyone contemplating hip replacement surgery. his skill and professional and caring manner is ably complimented by an outstanding staff that makes hip replacement surgery worthwhile with excellent results.

Best wishes to the office staff and hospital staff for a Happy New Year.

    With heartfelt appreciation,

  • I am a 77-year old man, very active, playing tennis 4-5 times a week and soccer on Sundays. So you can well imagine my total hopelessness when one day, two years ago, suddenly my right hip could not support my weight. I couldn't touch my toes, put my shocks on and could not walk much less run.

The pain was unbearable . Fast forward. After trying unsuccessfully acupuncture, physical therapy and steroid shots I was told that I needed a new hip, about which I was warned that the procedure, if not done properly, can have serious complications. Confused and scared I went on-line to find everything one needs to know under the circumstances. Firstly I had to decide the surgical approaches I felt comfortable with. I opted for the anterior approach over the more traditional posterior approach, for the smaller cut which limits damage to the muscle tissue. I can personally attest to the fact that I had my surgery in March 2008 and I was back playing tennis, pain free, in 3 months, as Dr. Davidovitch promised me. Which brings me to the second leg of my pre-op search. I had to pick the right surgeon. It didn't take me long to find out that the pioneer orthopedic surgeon in hip and pelvic reconstruction is Dr. Joel Matta in Santa Monica, California. With no hesitation I wanted to marry the best surgeon with the best procedure for optimum results. I did not want to settle being 80% satisfied. I wanted to be 100% satisfied, which I proved this year with my club's first place trophy in mixed doubles.

While packing to go to Santa Monica, again through the internet I discovered that Dr. Roy Davidovitch trained under Dr. Matta. The rest is history. Dr. Davidovitch and NUY are a unique combination bar none, I was treated with outmost professionalism as well as warmth, even affection, which reminds me of doctors and hospitals back in Europe where I come from , some 50 years ago. Dr Davidovitch treats you as if you are his only patient, a rare quality. Keep it up Roy . We need people like you,. Back to my surgery. The pre-op preparation was smooth, informative and patient-friendly, my surgery was pain free and uneventful, as was my recovery, short and “heavenly " due to my sedation. I was also given Lovenox to keep my blood thin. I spent 4 days at NYU after my surgery, and the 5th day I went to Burke in white Plains for Rehab, because it was more convenient for my wife to visit from Scarsdale. If I needed to my replace my left hip - which thank God I do not- I wouldn't hesitate a minute going back to Dr. Davidovitch at NYU. What I do instead is spread the word. This is the least I can do.

  • My Hip Replacement went much better than I could have imagined. I was walking and climbing stairs the next day in the hospital. I had no restrictions, no crutches, no high seat, nothing to impair my getting back to normal life. I went home after 3 days in the hospital. The visiting nurse came to my home as did the physical therapist. After 3 visits, they recommended I go to an outpatient facility. Dr Davidovitch recommended David Goldman whom he trained at Chelsea Physical Therapy and my progress was very rapid. I'm thankful to Dr Davidovitch for all he did for me. He is truly a knight in amour who saved me allot of pain and suffering. The Anterior Approach he practices is far superior to the archaic Traditional Approach. I have friends who have gone with the traditional approach with pain and suffering. Mine was almost painless and my recovery was remarkable. Today I am very physically active and I have recommended many friends and acquaintances to Dr Davidovitch.

  • For more than two years I was in pain. My pain started slowly, but progressed, by the time I foundDr. Davidovitch I was unable to live my life as I wished to. Pain and the inability to walk even a couple of blocks with my family was my life. I first spoke to the doctors office staff before my appointment and was reassured by their warmth and compassion. When I met with the doctor, he explained in detail the minimally invasive surgery I was a candidate for. I did my research and was confident after meeting the doctor I was in the right place. I can attest that having hip replacement surgery done by Dr. Davidovitch has given me back my life. I feel great and am back to doing everything I wanted and more, completely pain free. I have recommended him to many people and will continue to do so. Thank you.

  • I found out about Dr. D from my daughter's friend who works for J&J as Marketing VP who oversees the distribution of their prosthetic hip devices. She explained to me that Dr. D was using the newer “anterior approach" to hip replacement surgery and that the recovery time was faster and with less restrictions than the older method. The surgery went well. The only difficult time was the post-op pain that lasted a day or so but was managed with pain killers. I went home on the fourth day with a crutch to assist me. For two weeks I had a visiting therapist three days each week followed by 6 weeks of therapy at a local therapist to which I was able to drive myself. I went back to work part time as a handyman on the 20th day and full time without any restrictions after completing my therapy. Dr D not only did a great job, he was completely accessible after surgery via e-mail and promptly answered any questions that came up. My only regret is that I waited too long to do the surgery and put up with the hip pain unnecessarily. Do not hesitate to use Dr. Davidovitch!?Please feel free to call me to discuss my experience.

  • I first learned of Dr Roy Davidovitch and the Anterior Hip Replacement Approach from a special feature on New York WCBS Channel 2 News in October, 2008.

As you would expect Dr Davidovitch was interviewed extensively during the segment; explaining the procedure and the primary advantages of a less invasive method and a much quicker recovery time. Several patients where also interviewed commenting on the minimum incision and the fact that they were back to normal activities within a matter of weeks following the operation.

I decided to schedule an appointment with Dr. Davidovitch to evaluate my condition and discuss the Anterior Method. X-rays were taken prior to the appointment. My wife and I then met with Dr. Davidovitch. We had a number questions concerning the actual procedure, anesthesiologist, the hospital, its staff, follow-up visits, rehabilitation and insurance coverage. Dr. Davidovitch addressed each concern / question with detail and thoughtfulness . If he did not have the information, he directed us to the people or hospital department that had he information. Special note; he gave us all the time necessary to answer all questions and address any concerns.

I then asked and was given several patient referrals. I contacted a patient who had the operation approximately a month prior to me contacting him. He was totally satisfied with the procedure and the hospital. This patient is a college professor and was back in the classroom in a week with the assistance of a cane. He was off the cane within the month. Based on his experience he would recommend Dr. Davidovitch and the Anterior Method. He also suggested that I select a good rehabilitation facility prior to the procedure. Good advice.

I then had a second appointment with Dr. Davidovitch and shortly after scheduled the surgery which was done on January 8, 2009. I was released from the hospital in 3.5 days. I was in rehab 3 days/week for 2 months, 2 days/week for 1 month and 1 day/week for 1 month. I was on crutches for approximately 3 weeks and then a single crutch for 2 - 3 weeks. I resumed driving approximately 3 weeks after the operation. The hospital staff instructed me on the Lovenox injection which I did for a month.

It is now approaching 2 years since the operation. I have not had any difficulties or limitations in my personal or professional life.

Davidovitch’s skill, anterior surgical approach (this is key), his well run practice, and top notch hospital care.

  • 2 hip replacements and I’m good as new.

  • I’ve been active in sports all my life. When it was time for a total hip replacement, I researched several doctors before deciding to go with Dr Davidovitch because of his extensive expertise with athletes. I was very happy with the entire experience - the doctor, the office staff, and the hospital staff. I was especially happy with all the follow up from the Dr’s team as well as the App to show exercises to help recover so quickly.

D’s willingness to be available by email and answered all kinds of questions, with understanding, and within a very short period of time.

As far as changing my life – thank you.

  • I call it “The miracle on 17th street.” After having 4 different consults, I decided to have Anterior Hip Replacement surgery with Dr. Davidovitch. It is absolutely terrific to have my former life style restored. No more pills for pain relief, inability to walk distances, discomfort sitting in the theatre, movies or car. Back to walking through museums and not worrying about how far away I’m parked from my destinations. My surgery was on a Thursday, and I was home for lunch on Saturday. Wow – who could ask for anything better. At home I used a cane and was up and down the stairs in my house with no problem – one at a time for a while. Really no pain – more like muscle soreness. Yippee – “Independence Day.” My new hip is my very best friend (next to Dr. D.). How fortunate to live in these times when we can replace our worn-out parts. Sincerely, Very satisfied.

  • All I can say is that he promised I would be dancing at my daughter’s wedding just 7 weeks after my hip operation and he was absolutely right !!. However, he couldn’t change the fact that I am truly lousy dancer!!

He claims I’ll be back inside 5 years for the other hip. I respect his judgment, but I sure hope he’s wrong. But if I have to do it again he’s my man!!!

  • Dr. Roy Davidovitch was great. He was always attentive, always on, always asking a pertinent question, always listening when I had something to say. The operation he performed, with the anterior approach, was great. I healed rapidly and I’m in love with my new hip.

I discovered that a minimally invasive technique existed called “anterior total hip replacement”. So I read everything I could find about it and decided I was no longer afraid of surgery because the muscles aren’t cut so recovery is faster with much less pain. Next step was to find a surgeon who had been specially trained to do this operation and again I turned to the internet. That’s when I stumbled across Dr.

I’m able to stand and talk to someone for an hour or more if I want to.

I was forced to stop playing tennis and couldn’t even have a baseball catch with my 10 year old grandson.

She convinced me to go for a consultation to the NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases and to speak with Dr.

The numbness in my legs gradually disappeared and I was pleased to realize that I wasn’t in any pain, nor was I to be at any other time, both in the hospital and back at my home thanks to the surgery and my postoperative care at NYU.

The following day after breakfast my therapy nurse arrived and I was told to begin walking with the aid of a walker. I immediately got out of bed and walked up and down the hallway and up and down a flight of stairs with no pain. I repeated this in the afternoon. By the following day after therapy I was told that I would be going home that afternoon – 2 days after checking into the hospital for my surgery. My attending nurse and physician had already made arrangements for me to start my physical therapy at home and I met with a Home Health Agency representative who made arrangement for me to begin my home therapy the very next day.

My roommate, a man in his 30′s at the hospital had undergone conventional hip surgery several days before I had and was still unable to walk across the room by the time I was leaving for home.

The only suggestion that I would make is that the hospital should have more “walkers” available as they were in great demand by the patients.

I can’t believe how good I feel now and how quickly I was able to give up the walker (after 3 days at home) and used a cane for my mental security than out of need. I felt I could return to work after about two weeks but my wife insisted I remain home and relaxing, going out to dinner and visiting friends for another two weeks. The staff at the hospital helped me to arrange for home therapy and exercise to hasten my recovery and return to normal. After two weeks people who came to visit couldn’t believe I had hip surgery as everyone they knew who had the standard method had weeks of restrictions and pain and I was walking up and down stairs and moving around, and taking my shower with assistance.

I couldn’t touch my toes, put my shocks on and could not walk much less run.

It didn’t take me long to find out that the pioneer orthopedic surgeon in hip and pelvic reconstruction is Dr. Joel Matta in Santa Monica, California. With no hesitation I wanted to marry the best surgeon with the best procedure for optimum results. I did not want to settle being 80% satisfied. I wanted to be 100% satisfied, which I proved this year with my club’s first place trophy in mixed doubles.

The pre-op preparation was smooth, informative and patient-friendly, my surgery was pain free and uneventful, as was my recovery, short and “heavenly ” due to my sedation. I was also given Lovenox to keep my blood thin. I spent 4 days at NYU after my surgery, and the 5th day I went to Burke in white Plains for Rehab, because it was more convenient for my wife to visit from Scarsdale. If I needed to my replace my left hip – which thank God I do not- I wouldn’t hesitate a minute going back to Dr.

I’m thankful to Dr Davidovitch for all he did for me.

D from my daughter’s friend who works for J&J as Marketing VP who oversees the distribution of their prosthetic hip devices. She explained to me that Dr. D was using the newer “anterior approach” to hip replacement surgery and that the recovery time was faster and with less restrictions than the older method.

I was on crutches for approximately 3 weeks and then a single crutch for 2 – 3 weeks. I resumed driving approximately 3 weeks after the operation. The hospital staff instructed me on the Lovenox injection which I did for a month.

It is now approaching 2 years since the operation. I have not had any difficulties or limitations in my personal or professional life.

  • My hip replacement was a total succes thanks to Dr Capeci and staff for their professionalism and care i can walk now without pain and even start doing sport

    Thank you!

  • The overall experience was quite seamless and positive. The patient intake staff person, physician's assistant and X-Ray technician were courteous and efficient. A rare experience for me when visiting a physician for the first time. My X-rays were taken at the office and Dr. Capeci reviewed them right away. His approach to treating my condition which involves a shoulder injury and neck is comprehensive but at the same time, non-invasive. Too often, physicians recommend surgery for shoulder injuries. I highly recommend Dr. Capeci.

  • I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in my late 20s and was told I needed total knee replacement at the age of 31. With blinding denial (and a lot pride) I decided to wait on having the surgery…until the pain put my pride into perspective 14 years later. Originally, I was scheduled to have surgery with another (highly recommended) doctor from another hospital who is the head of Orthopedics there. I met with the doctor who had me wait an hour then spent 10 minutes with me. The doctor gave me a VERY brief idea of what to expect and his assistant gave me a package to take home. I distinctly recall him telling me, "Well, you will likely not see me after the surgery but one of my residents will be there. I get a lot of complaints about this but I'm very busy." When I got home, I decided to look up reviews on this doctor and they were terrible (even nurses from his own hospital said they went elsewhere for surgery). It wasn't just his "bedside manner," it was what his patients experienced after the surgery, some even needed to have surgery again to fix what the doctor had done. Long story short, I decided to look for other doctors and found Dr. Craig Capeci.

Dr. Capeci's office was able to schedule me right away to consult with him. His office is very professional and the staff is always helpful and friendly. I was able to get an x-ray done right in the same office and Dr. Capeci was able to review it right away. He listened to my concerns and took the time to explain the surgery and the expected results. This calmed much of my nervousness and fears regarding the surgery. Because I work for the city, there is so much paperwork that must be submitted in order for me to take medical leave. Dr. Capeci also took the time during my visit to fill out the paperwork. Further, when I had to reschedule the surgery due to my angiogram results, he filled out the paperwork again and had them sent to me immediately so that I could resubmit them.

On the day of the surgery, Dr. Capeci once again calmed me down as well as my mother and husband, who were with me. He let my family know what to expect and how long the surgery would take. When I awoke I was in recovery then sent to intensive care where I felt like I was waited on hand and foot! Dr. Capeci came by the very next morning to check in on me. He kept tabs on my progress while in the hospital and even at home, calling me to ask how I was feeling and if I had any questions for him. Each time I've visited with him, there was little-to-no wait time and he accommodated the several requests from my human resources office.

Dr. Craig Capeci is one of the most extraordinary doctors I've ever had the pleasure meet. He is very patient and understanding. He always explains actions that need to be taken. He anticipates the needs of his patients and truly cares for their well- being. I highly recommend him for anyone who needs total knee replacement or any other kind of orthopedic surgery. You will not find a better, more caring surgeon than him! And my new knee is better than ever!

  • What do I have to be thankful for on this Thanksgiving eve?

While the Good Lord has blessed me many times in my life - beautiful & healthy family, good job, nice home, excellent education, etc - one of the best events, relative to my quality of life, happened earlier this year in June when I was referred to Dr. Craig M. Capeci.

My right hip had been uncomfortable and difficult to function with for nearly 2 years. By April it became painful at all times - walking, sitting, lying down, and normal things like stairs, jogging, swimming and bike riding were nearly out of the question, due to constant severe pain and intermittent shooting pains in my lower back and throughout my right leg, all the way down to the ankle. It was no longer possible to “get comfortable” and sleeping was very difficult.

With apprehension and fear, I agreed to have hip replacement surgery - which Dr. Capeci strongly recommended shortly after viewing my x-rays. This surgery took place on Friday August 15 at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. Here is the rest of the story - for people who may be considering similar hip replacement surgery with Dr. Capeci.

On the same evening as the surgery I was up on my feet - walking with assistance to the toilet in my room. There was pain during the first night - bone and incision.

The next morning the NYU therapists had me up again and walking (with a walker) around and around in the halls of the hospital floor. They had a small wooden staircase for me to practice going up and down on, as I live in building without elevators - 5 flights up.

On Sunday morning the doctors on duty came to speak with me and evaluate my progress - after seeing me walk around the floor they agreed I could be discharged by noon. I was home and upstairs by 2PM.

Starting the next morning I worked hard on my recovery - up and down the stairs frequently and walking around my block (York Ave - 77th/ 78th Street) and within John Jay park with my wife, two sons, and puggle.

For me - the pain which I had been suffering from for years was completely gone by Sunday - my hip felt strong and solid, and my back and right leg were completely free of pain. During the initial week of recovery it was difficult to sleep for long periods as I needed to stay on my back at all times and be careful about the stitches.

Now it is a little over 3 months since the surgery and at times my hip is so strong and pain free that I forget I even had the surgery - all of my normal activities have returned except basketball and sprinting. Swimming, baseball, bike riding (up to 10 miles per ride) and “light football” with my sons are all back as routine activities - completely free of pain or discomfort. I am able to sit in all type of chairs, drive a sports car for hours, and I now sleep like a rock (on either side, back , or stomach).

One point of reference to consider came as we recently attended a Fordham University Football game vs. Penn at Rose Hill - and I reviewed the game program and previous schedule. The first point is that I vividly remember attending a Fordham baseball game in June with my sons - in constant pain, throbbing at all time. So bad it was challenging to walk, stand or sit - and try to stay happy with a smile on my face.On Friday Night August 29 (two weeks from the date of the surgery) we attended Fordham’s first football game of the current season vs. St. Francis. On that evening we walked from our home on East 77th Street, five avenue blocks to the # 6 train, took it down to Grand Central Station where we caught the Metro North to Fordham - walked to and across the campus to the football game. Watched the entire game on steel bleachers, and did the reverse travel to go home. No walker, no crutches, no cane, and no taxis - 13 days after hip replacement surgery.

Kudos for Dr Capeci - he is the consummate professional - the best in the business for hip replacement. I strongly recommend his services, skill, and expertise.

Thank you for your attention and time to read my story.

  • He was able to listen to my health issues and took his time to explain and discussed medical options/procedures. I felt he was sensitive, supportive and understanding to my problem. Thank you for listening Dr. Capeci.

  • You have heard me speak of our daughters' graduation hundreds of times. Both girls have graduated and it was beyond wonderful to attend without knee pain. They had a DJ and dancing. I have to tell you that I danced for almost 2 hours. It was so awesome to be able to dance and move PAIN FREE. So not only was I able to go to our daughters' graduations but I danced at one of them and for that I THANK YOU!!

  • After many years of fairly excellent health I sufferred from a ruptured achilles tendon. From the moment I encountered Dr. Capeci, he was clear, direct and easily comprehensible; answering all questions and insuring that I understood the entire procedure. My surgery and rehabilitation process went extremely well and I recovered ahead of schedule. I have never experienced a doctor who responds to calls and emails in such a timely manner. I would highly recommend Dr. Capeci.

  • I am a 60 year old dancer, actress and singer with osteoarthritis in my right hip. I had to stop my Pilates and some dance because of my disease. I am 3 months post-surgery and able to resume all my former activities.

I was very nervous about the surgery and Dr. Capeci spent a lot of time answering my questions online and over the telephone. My care in the hospital was outstanding - Dr. Capeci was very generous with his time all throughout pre-surgery and post-surgery.

Go to Dr. Capeci! I've already shared his name friends!
